WHAT

29J (techo por derecho) Outro  is an original track by Andalusian DJ and music producer  BrokenLip  based on the speech given by  Ana Cortés  (spokesperson of the Málaga collective Techo por Derecho) during the closing of the demonstration on 29 June 2024 in Málaga.

This was one of the many demonstrations that, during 2024, took place all over Spain protesting against the extractive tourism model and the socio-economic and environmental problems it generates.

HOW

Using  After Effects  as the main edition tool, this audiovisual work was created combining  three different sources :

AUDIO

The  track  created by Broken Lip from Ana Cortés' speech, included in his EP Bootleg Fantasy (a gazpachuelo's tale).

PHOTO

A selection of  photographs  documenting evictions in Málaga and published in its local press between the years 2013 and 2023.

VIDEO

The  audiovisual footage  (videos of speeches and protesters) captured by Mailor Soon during the #29J demonstration in Málaga.

Along with all of these resources came  an extra inspo:  to include the spirit of the hundreds of slogans that were chanted during the #29J demonstration in Málaga, here inserted as animated texts shown around and alongside Ana Cortés while she gives her passionate speech

STATEMENT

I was born in Málaga in 1986 and "killed in life" in the neighborhood of La Cruz del Humilladero between the years 2009 and 2015, half a decade in which we had to survive against the two great economic crises that have shaped the 21st century thus far: The Great Recession (2008 - 2011) and the European banking crisis (2010 - 2016).
But suddenly, just when we thought we could live a life without economic hardship, came the COVID health crisis and, to make it even worse, the capitalist acceleration which followed it and that has turned basic rights of the Welfare State (access to housing, public education and health) into mere commodities for private investment, rentism and speculation.
Thus, and in the face of a new new crisis of the capitalist model, this audiovisual piece has been created both as a tribute and a message of encouragement for the people of Málaga who are not willing to resign despite this tough reality, whether they are no longer living in the city (expelled by extractive tourism), or still surviving and trying to make ends meet en el barrio.
Only us, the citizens that made the wonderful city of Málaga possible (despite its many flaws) have the power to save the place from speculation and institutional neglect, returning it to a life that we want to live (and dance!) here in our city, not in Alhaurín (nor Cártama, nor Madrid, nor London nor Berlin).

_

We are going to live, not to survive.
